HACC is officially beginning the conversion to single stream recycling. Bins specifying ‘plastic’ or ‘aluminum’ will be replaced with a single container that can hold multiple forms of recycling.
“The single stream recycling accepts more materials than what we used to recycle. Students, faculty, and staff are now able to place tin, aluminum, plastic (1-7), cardboard (corrugated and non-corrugated), mixed paper, newspapers, and magazines all in one container” said Richard Cardamone, executive director of business affairs.
The change will be fully implemented over the next few weeks. In the meantime, any recycling material may be placed in any container. Cardamone states “we are trying to make it as simple as possible to increase recycling participation.”
Switching to single stream recycling simplifies the recycling process. The hope is to increase participation in recycling in order to have a greener campus.
Student opinion favors the switch. “People are going to be attracted to the fact that they can dispose of any piece of recycling in a single container” says Becky Arney. “I think this will help HACC reduce their amount of waste.”
